Before You Touch My Hair

An open letter to the Curious.

Dear Sir/Madam

I noticed you noticing me when I walked in, and I could not fathom your sense of bewilderment at my appearance. I think I dress appropriately, conservative at best, and I am quite sure I harbour no bodily odour as you uneasily gazed at my passing in the aisle . One would have thought I rode in on a unicycle accompanied by a juggling dog, yet I bore only my handbag and cellphone upon my person.

I see you whisper and avoid eye contact with me, and I begin to wonder what may be the cause of your mild distress, while feigning ignorance to your obvious discomfort as I perused the shelves of the jeans section, hoping to find something that will finally accommodate my African proportions. Did my choice in fashion upset you, perhaps? I moved on, hoping to avoid you.

To Be Super Natural

Hey Natties,

Firstly I would just like to let you all know that this week our Facebook Group hit 10,000 members! What?!

Yeah, Baby!

That may not seem like a lot, compared to the other groups out there but it’s 10,000 we have never had before. In 4 months! That’s quite a lot of growth. But, no champagne was popped just yet… as we are aiming to grow even bigger and help even more Natties, like yourself out there. We will do something special when we reach 20,000!

Who is She? Why is She Here?

Hey Natties,

Kim Houston Here! The first-time blogger in the house and baby, it sure does feel good. But let me pump those brakes for a minute before I start rambling along. Let’s get the introductions out of the way. Bryce gave you a brief overview, but I’m going to put the icing on the cake now. So who am I?

Well, I am a 31-year-old woman of colour, Born and Raised in Durban, KZN South Africa. Doing well for 31 wouldn’t you say? 😉

Shock and Awe

Hey, Natties!

It’s been a busy week, to say the least. Being an Admin of a thriving Natural Hair Group can get pretty hectic. I mean, from hair problems and general Q&A to people trying to sell Penis Enlargement ointments to catch the desperate: I kid you not! (This is South Africa, after all). From this, one can see how my troubles vary. But as I stood bleary-eyed at the office copier machine of my 9 to 5, hypnotised by the flashing light, my mind trailed off for a minute, and I began to wonder about something. I’m pretty chilled about women being natural, heck I promote that stuff everywhere I go! But how do other guys embrace their woman deciding to go natural? Or return, as we like to say. And no, it does not mean she is going to stop taking care of herself!

About That Saturday

Hey there Natties!

Let me just kick my feet up for a sec, because even TELLING you how great our first event was is enough to blow me away. Pull up a seat, hun, and let Momma give you the 411. Before I carry on, I must thank my brother for all his help and support as well as Kim (You’ll meet her) for all her patience. Now that the formalities are out of the way, here’s the juice.

Damn, Talk about #NATTYGIRLMAGIC! It was curls and kinks galore at La Bella Riverside Cafe, in Durban North, Saturday, October 29th, 2016 , where we hosted our very first It’s All Natural Social Day, with the theme “A Touch of Africa.” Melanin levels skyrocketed, as 100 energized natural beauties united to celebrate natural hair and heritage.
